Zamzam’s Story


Zamzam Yasin Ali, a 30 year old mother of six children, lives in Yooco village in Sool region. Zamzam is a pastoralist woman and her family derives its income from livestock, she had a problem of getting water for her family daily life uses. It was difficult for women to bring water from the shallow wells – Yooco shallow wells were used traditional techniques of getting water consumption and at least three men were involved to get water for their livestock and families.

Through SOMJR project Zamzam and her community gets a support of rehabilitation shallow wells, installation of solar generators and installation of 160m extension Kiosk as well as construction of latrines and distribution of hygiene and sanitation kits.

After the project intervention, Zamzam and her family can easily access the water sources without effort of man-power and without diesel fuel cost. It was a turning point, as Zamzam describes.

“Before the rehabilitation of shallow wells, for me it was difficult to get water for my children and entire family. Bringing water from the shallow well was difficult for women and men were bringing water for livestock and families consumption. After Candlelight rehabilitated the shallow well with solar system and extension kiosk near our homes, we can easily access the water kiosk and take our wheelbarrow which proved by Candlelight, thanks to candlelight for their support”
