Rehabilitation of Barkads & Youth Training


Reducing Vulnerability and Building Community Resilience to Climate Change Effects in Somaliland is a project which funded by KNH/BMZ. The project aims at increasing the resilience of 18,000 resources for poor agro pastoralists and pastoralists in the target regions of Togdheer and Sahil so they may better cope with the adverse economic, social, and ecological impacts of climate change.

The project has made significant steps in making the communities  to have necessary awareness and  knowledge on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and  mitigation mechanisms, the level of awareness on preparedness  of project supported communities particularly Beer, Goadawayn, Haji Salah have been increasingly being noted. Here are some of the recent activities implemented.

  • Candlelight project team rehabilitated 9 Berkads in three rural villages( Haji Salah, War ibran and Ali farah) the recent rehabilitated Barkads are fully serving water for both human and livestock during this critical drought effect.
  • Ten local youth artisans received eight days training on making energy saving stoves (ceramic stoves) and provided them with necessary equipment. Duration of the training was 23rd -30 November 2016 These youth trainees were drawn from four target villages Burao (6 persons), Odweine (1 person), Beer (1prs) and War bran (1prs). the training used practical exercises enabling trainees to master  the process and stages of developing stoves which includes, selection  and sampling of clays,  process of soil mixture , Kneading, modelling and  fermentation period. Additionally, they have learned how to design and make moulding using modelling bar and baking using iron made ovens. Furthermore.  Total of 50 energy saving stoves have been produced by the trainees in course of training exercise .the final products (stoves) have been demonstrated to public to make marketing and especially the neighbours closely watching the training exercise. Finally, the stoves have been distributed to trainee. Each trainee have received five stoves estimated 75 USD (15 UD per stove as start up cash.
