Bookh Grazing Reservation

Rehabilitation and Management of Grazing and Forestry Reserve project is the one funded by the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) through the Ministry of Environment and Rural Development. The project is mainly focused on potential rangelands and forests reserves in Somaliland, such as Bookh and Lafaruug grazing reserves and Gacan Libah and Dalloe forest reserves.

Generally, the major aim of this project is the management and restoration of valuable trees species and palatable grasses on degraded forest and rangelands dominated by low value trees and unpalatable grasses and reducing water runoff.

Bookh grazing reserve is locate 20 km North West of Goda district and south at the eastern most plains of Gacan Libah Montain. The area is in a grassy plain with few shrubs and trees. Bookh is one of the important grazing reserves in Sahel region the land area of Book is of 6 km length and 2 km wide

These pictures are Book grazing reserve of where we erected soil bunds and the gabion check dams. These check dams are made in Bookh where gullies formed which some of them are reaching around two meter deep as you can see the blow pictures that accelerate water runoff and the existing loss of nutrient soil particles and different plant seeds.

After using several techniques of soil and water conservation techniques particularly, soil bunds and gabion check dams for land treatment and erosion control reaching 81,600 linear meters of soil bunds and 230 M3 of gabion check dams.

After completing this task we took a quite number of pictures that will give us the baseline information about how the change will be after constructing these conservation structures and  we can also trace  back the impact of the these structures, how land recover and these gullies treated for the coming rain season, and how they reduce water runoff and  relevant erosion problems. In that regards we will do yearly impact assessment to show the effectiveness of these conservation components
