Shelter Provision, Reintegration and Improved Livelihoods for Returnees and IDPs in 4 Towns in Somaliland


In Burao, the project will build 265 houses for different HHs. 80 (women and youth) individuals from the 265 target HHs will be provided skills training including Tailoring, Henna Decoration, Plumbing and Carpentry with the aim is to make sure these trainees sustain the livelihood of their families. In addition, Candlelight is responsible building a community center with meeting hall, pharmacy and offices, 2 Water reservoirs and 265 water tanks for each HH.

Project Objectives:

  1. to provide mobilization to the community committee through community workshops
  2. To develop and build community Infrastructure in the selected locations

Project Period: May 2015 to Feb 2016

Intervention Area Burao- Togdher region

Main Activities :

  • Providing in-kind contribution in the form of sufficient and appropriate training facilities;
  • Implement and complete project activities according to the work plan and budget, i.e. provision of vocational skills training for selected beneficiaries in Hargeisa and the provision of prioritized community infrastructure at the resettlement site in Hargeisa;
  • Select and hire required training and support staff, as required for the vocational skills training activities and the construction of community infrastructure;
  • Procure required training equipment and toolkits for graduators;
  • Procure and deliver household water tanks to the settlement according to the work plan and budget ;
  • Mobilize and sensitize targeted IDP communities, in close collaboration with local a Shelter Technical Committees (STCs) and selected community representatives;
  • Support the formation of a community committee from representatives from the shelter project beneficiary community;
  • Organize consultations on community driven identification of community infrastructure in the new settlement;
  • Develop a training plan and appropriate curriculum for all training subjects; ensure the timely implementation and the proper organization of all training activities according to the work plan and budget;
  • Training of the selected beneficiaries in basic skills according to the selected types of trainings according to the work plan and budget;
  • Liaise and collaborate with UN-Habitat technical staff in supervision and quality control of training activities and construction works;
  • Organize a graduation ceremony after completion of the skills trainings and provide training certificates and toolkits to beneficiaries who completed the training successfully;

Remarks from the project manager:

The project BUILT 265 houses to the most poor and marginalized households for homes. In addition, the project provided skills training to 80 youth from the 265 HHs with the aim of fostering livelihoods of these target people. To sum up, the project was first of its kind in Burao that accomplish such these comprehensive support to poor people.
