Latest activities for Community Education on FGM and livelihood Support Project

The latest activities of Community Education on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM/C) and livelihood Support project in Sheikh

1. Candlelight staff with the help of Horn Cable Television hosted a lively debate with the main speakers: members from local council, representatives from ministries of health and education, prominent religious and cultural leaders, parents, students and youth in Sheikh town. The aim of this activity was to engage the prominent figures of Sheikh community to the campaign against FGM/C harmful practices and to make the FGM/C issue more visible.

2. Two days sensitization workshop on FGM/C and its harmful consequences have been conducted for 20 school teachers(50% female) from six different schools in Sheikh District.

3. Three days sensitization training on the harmful effects of FGM/C have been organized and conducted for 21 members from the community education committees (CECs).

4. Community-to-community dialogue on the female genital mutilation’s harmful consequences have been conducted. A task force team consisting of 5 community members from Sheikh district who have already been previously sensitized and three project staff were sent to rural villages to discuss the communities in those villages with the issue of FGM/C and its consequences and the importance to uproot this harmful culture.

5. Soil and water conservation activity in Gugux village is in progress. 2400 linear meters of soil bunds is expected to be erected at the end of this activity. This helps the farmers and pastoralists in Gugux settlement to cultivate their lands with water and fertilized soil conserved.

6. One day KNH-Candlelight monitoring trip to the project intervention sites has been conducted. Candlelight program manager, KNH country coordinator and KNH project manager conducted the monitoring. Different project activities have been observed and some community beneficiaries during the monitoring trip
