Improving Women’s Status through Economic Empowerment in Somaliland


The overall goal of the project is to enhance environmental protection and disaster risk reduction by developing the skills of 400 women through training on environment protection, disaster preparedness and early warning systems.

Specific Objective:

  • To support 300 women and their organizations (at least six) to gain the knowledge and skills to advocate and promote women’s social and economic rights in Somaliland.
  • To improve the livelihoods of 2700 rural women by developing their knowledge business skills and access to credit and saving services.
  • To enhance environmental protection and disaster risk reduction in four regions by developing the skills of 400 women.

Project Period:  March 2013 – February 2015 (two years).

Targeted Locations: Sahil and Maroodi Jeex regions

Expected Results of the project:

  • Future Action plan is developed by the women
  • Women Environmental groups become responsive to environmental issues.
  • Women become capable for planning &  organizing their    meetings

Main component  Activities :

  • Organize Consultative meetings with the local women and their organizations to come to a common understanding of the activity and develop the selection criteria for women platform group.
  • Conduct 8 training workshops participated by 400 women environmental platform groups in disaster preparedness, environmental education and natural resource management.
  • Hold monthly meetings for women environmental platform group.
  • Establish 4 tree nurseries and distribute and plant 4000( 2000 seedlings in yr 1)  trees of the appropriate species
  • Hold  8 outreach orientation events participated by 200 villagers.
