Enhancing sustainable livelihoods and community based natural resources management


In an effort to create a more sustainable system for managing natural resources and improving food security and resilience among pastoral and agro pastoral communities, Candlelight carried out an assortment of activities in these areas which include: agricultural inputs, soil and water conservation, training and distribution of hand tools and seedlings.

Project overall goal:  Sustainable management of natural resources and improved food security situation among pastoral and agro-pastoral communities

Specific Objective: Improve livelihoods through fodder production, reforestation and agro-forestry in Ga’an Libah and Salahley/Balli-gubadle areas by establishing 192,000 linear meters of soil bunds and stone terraces through cash for work

Project Period: 33 Months   (2012-2014)

Targeted Locations: in Ga’an Libah, Selahley and Balli-gubadle districts

Expected Result:

  • 192,000 linear meters of soil and water conservation structures established
  • 360 sets of hand tools of farm tools distributed- 5,000 multipurpose tree seedlings for fruit, shade and agro-forestry use distributed in the target area.
  • 120 community members trained on community based natural resources management and conflict management.
  • 40 community members trained on the design, construction and maintenance of low cost soil and water conservation structures.
  • A manual for low cost soil and water conservation is drafted, translated into Somali and distributed to the beneficiaries.
  • 40 community members are trained on sustainable agricultural practices in dry land farming
  • Beneficiary communities are acquainted with the policies related to natural resource management.
