Support to Population in Humanitarian Emergencies (SPHERE)


The overall goal of the project is aiming at the improvement of standard of living and quality of life of the pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, farmers and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sanaag and Togdheer regions and it is about these sectors.

Specific Objectives

  • 15,430of beneficiaries decrease in the incidence of water borne diseases in the wash sector by the end of the project lives.
  • 2160 of the most vulnerable IDPs have access to non-food items (NFIs) in three IDPs camps in  Burao locations.
  • 2,708 of the most vulnerable community members including pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and farmers are supported to be resilient and secure better livelihoods through cash transfer in 10 locations.

Beneficiaries:

The project will be implemented in towns and villages in the predominantly pastoral and agropastoral and IDPs areas of Sanag and Togdheer regions. The project is intended to directly benefit  20,298 persons and indirectly 24,618 persons in El-afweine, Erigavo, Badhan and Burao districts. Here are gender disaggregated tables on each activity:

Activities

  • Organize unconditional cash transfer (UCT) to 450 poor households for a period of 3 months on the basis of the abovementioned criteria;
  • Purchase 360 non-food items (NFI’s) consisting of plastic Sheet, sleeping mat, a set of utensils, Jerry cans, a bar of soap, treated mosquito nets and blankets and distribute  to IDPs in Burao.
  • Carry out construction of ten (10) latrines and three (3) garbage pits in the villages of El Buh and Yufle.
  • Purchase 720 insecticide treated nets and distribute to the same number of families;
  • Conduct a post distribution monitoring visits to the targeted sites
  • Carry out the rehabilitation of 6 shallow wells in three villages of Yufle, Biyo-Guduud and Badhan-Middigale;
  • Purchase two (2) chlorine dosing kits for project use and further to be used for similar projects
  • Participate in the World Water Day (March  2013) with the aim of creating greater awareness about the importance of water and the need to ensure safe drinking water for all;
  • Carry out temporary water trucking to address acute water shortage and to strengthen it with the aqua tablets distribution campaign;
  • Procure and distribute aqua tablets for water purification to 15,430 beneficiaries.
  • Carry out hand washing campaigns in all the project locations. This activity will be coincided with the World Water Day and hygiene/sanitation training
